Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) is a venereal disease transmitted during breeding activity or by contact with contaminated objects. It can cause infertility in both mares and stallions, with infected mares showing little to no outward signs of the illness and stallions showing no signs at all. All breeding horses over the age of two that come into the United States from countries known to have CEM are required by the USDA to undergo testing and treatment at an accredited CEM quarantine facility. Geldings are exempt from quarantine. CEM is not present within the United States; the purpose of quarantining imported horses is to prevent the introduction of CEM into the country.
For more information on CEM, please visit the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services website, www.aphis.usda.gov. Click on “Animal Health” and then “Animal Disease Information.”
